Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute

Named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by HealthGrades in 2007 and 2008, Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute is a regional referral center for the four county Treasure Coast area.  As a 341-bed acute care hospital, it offers a wide variety of medical/surgical treatments.  Specialty services include open heart surgery, trauma services, stroke care, minimally invasive prostate cancer surgery, and inpatient rehabilitation. Our obstetrics services are backed by a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Population Served

Premature infants through end of life, including but not limited to: NICU, pediatrics, general medical, cardiac, oncology, surgical, neurologic, trauma, dementia, stroke, inpatient rehabilitation, inpatient psychiatric, and hospice/terminally ill patients.

Internship Experience

Interns can expect to get a rich experience with a variety of patients with varying diagnoses.  Interns will have opportunities to observe, co-lead, and lead individual and group sessions in all hospital units and areas (intern will be required to drive short distances to outlying buildings), including music therapy with staff and support groups.  Interns will participate in interdisciplinary efforts/meetings, document patient progress, expand their music and intervention repertoires, present educational in-services, and complete special creative projects.

Start dates: NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2011

Prospective interns are encouraged to apply one year prior to desired start date.  Applications are due six months prior to desired start date, and can be mailed or emailed.  Applications will be reviewed and prospective interns will be contacted to schedule an interview.  If the applicant is unable to complete the interview in person, he/she must submit a video of music skills and then complete a phone interview.  See below for entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for acceptance into the internship program, prospective interns must demonstrate:
  -  proficiency in singing, guitar strumming/picking, and basic keyboard accompaniment
  -  functional repertoire of various genres (gospel/spiritual, country, jazz, rock, standards, etc.)
  -  working knowledge of common medical music therapy goals and objectives
  -  understanding of basic music therapy interventions used in medical settings
  -  professional behavior and appearance

Essentials

Housing - not provided
Meals - discount in hospital cafe is provided
Stipend - $2,000.00 provided, contingent upon funding
Liability insurance - required and provided by intern or college/university
Transportation - although public transportation is available, interns must have reliable transportation in order to drive to nearby hospital facilities

Prior to the start of internship, LRMC requires a level 2 background check, negative 10-panel drug screen, negative PPD test, and an affiliation agreement with the intern's college/university.

Equipment and Resources

The LRMC music therapy department offers extensive resources for interns.  Each intern is provided with a Yamaha classical guitar with strap, backpack style gig bag, electronic tuner, and digital voice recorder to use during the internship.  Interns also have access to:
  -  harps
  -  Q-chords
  -  keyboard
  -  tone chimes
  -  puppets
  -  variety of instruments for children and adults
  -  extensive music library
  -  iPod and iTunes subscription
  -  music therapy research and text books
  -  video and audio recording equipment
